Art Ferrante, Pop Pianist in Famed Duo, Dies at 88

Oh, those wigs and jackets.

Another Times obit today for another space-age legend. My dad loved easy-listening music, so the local easy-listening FM station was always his first choice in the car or the living room (usually both). Montovani, the 101 Strings, and Ferrante & Teicher comprised much of the soundtrack of my early childhood.

Illustrator Bernie Fuchs, who’s work I only recently came to know about and adore, has died.

Here’s a snippet from The Awl piece where we talked about Bernie:

Illustrator Murray Tinkelman, who also worked at Cooper’s Studio, gave an interview about the first time he saw Fuchs work: “It was gorgeous” he said. He conferred with the other two superstars of Cooper Studios, Joe Bowler and Coby Whitmore. Bowler and Whitmore arrived together to inspect the new painting. Whitmore was “speechless,” Bowler said: “I don’t know who the hell did this, but the business is never going to be the same.”

And here is the NYT obit

One of the great illustrators of the 20th century. Go read the Times obit.

Pretty sure these guys play with the Seattle Quake RFC. If it were in color, I would be more sure.

Essential characteristics of good UX designers

This sounds about right, though I’d change some of the qualifying adjectives (e.g., “deep understanding” in #1 is overkill, “moderate familiarity” in #5 is too weak).

  1. A Deep Understanding of Human Psychology & Research Methods
  2. Competence in the Basics of Graphic Design
  3. An Awareness of and Interest in Technology
  4. Verbal & Visual Communication Skills
  5. Moderate Familiarity with Business, Deep Familiarity with Your Business
  6. The Ability to Quickly Learn a Subject Matter Area
  7. Mediation, Facilitation, & Translation Skills
  8. Creativity & Vision
  9. Passion

River Ocean feat India, “Love & Happiness (Sao Benitez Sunset Mix)”

I hadn’t heard this samba-based remix of India’s legendary club anthem before just now, but it is working my last nerve — in the best possible way.

Our Favorite Shop by The Style Council turned me into a socialist, and the biggest Paul Weller fan in Queens, NY, at least for a little while. I bought the original UK import — the one with the gatefold — and I stared at the cover for hours. (My favorite movie at the time was, of course, “Another Country”.)

Alison Limerick, “Where Love Lives”. Remixed by Frankie Knuckles & David Morales for Def Mix Productions.

The quintessential marriage of UK and NYC house: Terry Burrus on keyboards, John Poppo at the board, and Frankie and David tag-teaming in the booth.

It has never been surpassed.

Pianist Sergio Godínez performs a read through of my Mulheres Apaixonadas (Women in Love), written for Pete Arden. The title is a very obscure reference to the title of a Brazilian soap opera, and also to the book Women in Love, by DH Laurence. This is my most romantic and cinematic piece I have yet composed.

Mejoe wrote this for me (I know, right?). It’s beautiful, and I love it.

To quote Oscar Hammerstein III, “I must have done something good.”
